Relaxation mechanisms in collagen rich tissues

چکیده

Collagen Hydration Collagen has a high degree of water absorption due to the process of collagen hydration. In tissue such as cartilage and tendon, the water forms a hydrogen-bonded chains running parallel to the axis of long collagen molecule. The overall model of water hydration involves the chain-like inner hydration layer, in which the water molecules are hydrogenbonded to the collagen and several outer layers which are considerably more mobile (1). In consequence, the magnetic resonance properties of water in collagen-rich structures are highly heterogeneous and complex. In particular, water exhibits multiple resonance frequencies due to different chemical environment of inner and outer shells (2). Since MR signal strongly depends on water mobility and interactions between water protons and collagen hydrogen atoms, collagen-rich structures have very interesting T2 relaxation properties and high degree of magnetization transfer effect.

A mathematical model for creep, relaxation and strain stiffening in parallel-fibered collagenous tissues.

A simple model is presented for the description of relaxation, creep, and strain stiffening phenomena that are observed in parallel-fibered collagenous tissues such as ligaments and tendons. In the model formulation, the tissues are assumed to be composed of collagen fibers aligned along their physiological loading direction. The collagen fibers are gradually recruited under strain and are arra...

Effect of Partial H2O-D2O Replacement on the Anisotropy of Transverse Proton Spin Relaxation in Bovine Articular Cartilage

Anisotropy of transverse proton spin relaxation in collagen-rich tissues like cartilage and tendon is a well-known phenomenon that manifests itself as the "magic-angle" effect in magnetic resonance images of these tissues. It is usually attributed to the non-zero averaging of intra-molecular dipolar interactions in water molecules bound to oriented collagen fibers. One way to manipulate the con...

GDF-5 deficiency alters stress-relaxation properties in mouse skin.

Objective: Growth / Differentiation Factor-5 (GDF-5) is a member of the family of Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs) known to have diverse effects on musculoskeletal connective tissues [1,2]. Recently, biomechanical and ultrastructural abnormalities have been demonstrated in several collagen-rich tissues from GDF-5 deficient mice, including Achilles tendon, tail tendon, and long bone [3-5]. In ...

A Nano-indentation Identification Technique for Viscoelastic Constitutive Characteristics of Periodontal Ligaments

Introduction: Nano-indentation has recently been employed as a powerful tool for determining the mechanical properties of biological tissues on nano and micro scales. A majority of soft biological tissues such as ligaments and tendons exhibit viscoelastic or time-dependent behaviors. The constitutive characterization of soft tissues is among very important subjects in clinical medicine and espe...

Collagen orientation and molecular spacing during creep and stress-relaxation in soft connective tissues.

Collagen fibres form cross-helical, cross-ply or quasi-random feltworks in extensible connective tissues; strain-induced reorientation of these networks gives rise to the non-linear mechanical properties of connective tissue at finite strains. Such tissues are also generally viscoelastic (i.e. display time-dependent properties). The hypothesis that time-dependent reorientation of collagen fibre...
